Why are communities opposing data center developments?
Communities are expressing concerns over various issues related to data centers, including increased energy demands that could lead to higher electric bills, loss of open spaces and farmland, potential negative impacts on property values and quality of life, and environmental worries such as the depletion of local water sources. Many residents feel that these developments could disrupt their way of life and are actively organizing to voice their opposition.
How are local governments responding to data center proposals?
Local governments are grappling with how to incorporate energy- and water-intensive data centers into their zoning frameworks. Some municipalities are considering new ordinances or waivers, while others lack zoning regulations altogether. As community opposition grows, many local boards are facing pressure from residents to reject these proposals, leading to an increase in public meetings and discussions about the implications of such developments.
What impact is community pushback having on data center projects?
Community pushback is significantly impacting data center projects, with reports indicating that between April and June, 20 proposals valued at $98 billion were blocked or delayed due to local opposition. This trend is prompting developers to reconsider their strategies, with some even contemplating selling properties after securing power sources, as the risk of losing zoning approvals becomes a major concern.
